A few weeks ago, we visited the newly opened Kawachinagano Japanese Garden, and honestly… it felt like stepping into another world.
Tucked along the Monon Trail, this Japanese garden is one of those places that instantly slows you down. From the moment you walk in, you can tell how intentional everything is the landscaping, the layout, the way the trees are placed. It truly captures that minimalist and peaceful Japanese aesthetic.
What impressed us the most is how well adapted the space is. The design feels authentic, not forced. The greenery, the pathways, and the carefully curated details make you feel like you’ve been transported somewhere far from Indiana—somewhere quieter, more reflective.
It’s not a huge park, but that’s part of its charm. It’s perfect for a short walk, a moment to disconnect, or even just to sit and enjoy the surroundings. If you’re in the area, this is definitely a must-visit spot.

On May 3, 2026, Carmel will host the Carmel Japan SpringFest, a free community event celebrating Japanese culture and the city’s sister relationship with Kawachinagano, Japan.
