Every March, Indianapolis transforms into a sea of green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, and one of the most iconic traditions is the Greening of the Canal. This vibrant event dyes the downtown Indy Canal a brilliant shade of emerald, bringing the city together for a night of celebration, music, and Irish cheer.
The 29th Annual Hoosier Lottery Greening of the Canal will take place on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Ohio Street Canal Basin (West St. & Ohio St.). Arrive early to grab a prime viewing spot and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
This family-friendly event kicks off a weekend full of St. Patrick’s Day festivities in Indianapolis. The evening will feature live Irish music, performances by the Indianapolis 500 Gordon Pipers, and appearances from special guests. This year’s honorary pourers; Mayor Joe Hogsett, Fred Glass (2025 Irish Citizen of the Year), and the Executive Director of the Hoosier Lottery will take center stage to pour the vibrant green dye into the canal.
In addition to the visual spectacle, attendees can enjoy delicious bites from local food trucks while soaking in the festive spirit. The entire event will also be streamed live on the Indianapolis St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Facebook page and the Hoosier Lottery Facebook page, so you can tune in even if you can’t make it downtown.
Finding parking downtown can be tricky, so plan ahead! Paid parking is available at Senate Street, Ohio Street, New York Street, and Indiana Avenue, or you can use the White River State Park parking garage off Washington Street. Arriving early or using a ride-share service is highly recommended.
