Turkey Run is known for its dramatic landscapes that feel like you’ve stepped into another world. Think moss-covered ravines, towering cliffs, trickling streams, and gorgeous old-growth trees. If you love hiking, photography, or simply being in nature, it’s a paradise.
Some of the park’s biggest highlights include:
Trail 3 (The Rugged Trail) — a must-hike! It involves climbing through canyons and along ladders, and it’s pure fun.
Suspension Bridge — a favorite photo spot that takes you over Sugar Creek.
Sugar Creek Canoeing — rent a canoe or kayak and float peacefully under scenic limestone bluffs.
The Historic Turkey Run Inn — an affordable, cozy stay right inside the park.
We visited on a sunny Saturday in June and stayed at the Turkey Run Inn, which we highly recommend. Booking ahead is essential, especially in summer — rooms fill up fast.
We started our morning with a hearty breakfast at the Inn’s restaurant and hit the trails by 9 AM to beat the heat. We chose Trail 3, and wow — climbing the stone steps and maneuvering through rocky gorges was both a challenge and a blast. Our tip: wear good grip hiking shoes and bring a water bottle.
By midday, we crossed the suspension bridge (Instagram-worthy moment, for sure) and enjoyed a packed picnic by the creek. Canoeing on Sugar Creek was the highlight of the afternoon — calm waters, wildlife sightings, and absolute tranquility.
In the evening, we relaxed by the outdoor fire pit at the Inn, recounting the day’s adventures with fellow travelers.
Book your stay early — if you want to stay at Turkey Run Inn or the campground, reserve well in advance.
Start hikes early — the park can get busy by late morning, especially in summer.
Trail recommendations:
Adventure lovers → Trail 3
Families with kids → Trail 6 or Trail 2
Pack water & snacks — while there is a small camp store, it’s smart to bring what you need.
Wear sturdy footwear — trails can be slippery with water and moss.
Consider weekday visits — for fewer crowds and more peaceful hikes.
There’s something magical about Turkey Run — it offers the perfect blend of adventure, beauty, and relaxation. Whether you’re hiking through canyons, paddling Sugar Creek, or enjoying a quiet night under the stars, this park delivers.
For us, it was a chance to disconnect from screens, reconnect with nature, and create memories we’ll be talking about for years. Whether you’re planning a day trip or a full weekend getaway, Turkey Run State Park is a summer essential for Indiana explorers.
