A West Side Story Takes Over the Zoo: A Magical Night with Music, Love & Open-Air Drama

Last night, we had the chance to experience something truly special—West Side Story live at the Indianapolis Zoo’s Bicentennial Pavilion—and wow, what a night. Picture this: golden hour light, the hum of the zoo in the background, and the first notes of “Tonight” floating through the air. Goosebumps.

Presented by Indianapolis Opera, this outdoor musical event runs May 9, 10, and 11 at 7 PM, and trust us—you’ll want to be there. Set in 1950s New York, West Side Story tells the legendary love story of Tony and Maria, whose romance defies the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks. It’s intense, emotional, and unforgettable.

The cast? Phenomenal. The music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim? Iconic. You’ll hear all the classics: “Maria,” “Somewhere,” “America,” and more. But what really takes this show to the next level is the setting—live theater under the stars, surrounded by nature, in the heart of the zoo.

Whether you’re a die-hard musical fan or just looking for a unique night out in Indianapolis, this show hits all the right notes. Tickets range from $39 to $92 for individual seats, or treat yourself to a Bistro Table setup (starting at $240) for the ultimate experience with friends or a date night.

🎟️ Grab your tickets at indyopera.org before they sell out—this is only happening one weekend.

Big feelings, big voices, big open sky—West Side Story at the zoo is one of Indy’s must-do events this May. Don’t miss it.

We lived it and LOVED it! ✨
