A fresh space for families, nature, and imagination in Indianapolis
Yesterday, We Like Indy had the chance to experience something truly special — the brand-new Holliday Park Playground. It’s not just a new play space; it’s a reimagined corner of Indianapolis that perfectly blends nature, creativity, and community spirit.
After years of planning, fundraising, and dreaming, the new playground officially opens to the public on Sunday, November 2, and it’s every bit as magical as families hoped it would be.
Walking into the playground feels like stepping into a storybook — where tree-lined paths lead to towering timber structures, curving slides, and swings that catch the sunlight. The design, led by REA with support from the Lilly Endowment Grant and the Holliday Park Foundation, captures what makes Holliday Park so loved: that peaceful mix of adventure and nature.
Kids of all ages will find something to explore here. From gentle toddler zones filled with whimsical shapes to exciting climbing towers and hillside slides, every corner invites imagination. There’s also a new entry court that welcomes families with open space and easy access — a small but meaningful touch that makes the visit smoother for everyone.
What’s most inspiring is how this playground came to life — through true community collaboration. The City of Indianapolis, Indy Parks, and the Holliday Park Foundation joined forces to make this $5 million project possible, part of a larger citywide investment to enhance playgrounds and parks.
As Adam Barnes, Executive Director of the Foundation, shared, the vision was to build “a space where the next generation can connect to the outdoors, joyfully play, and build community.”
That mission comes to life in every design detail — from the shaded seating areas for parents to the natural textures that echo the park’s surrounding trails. And with continued support from the Efroymson Family Fund’s 1:1 match challenge, the future of Holliday Park looks brighter than ever.
If you want to experience the magic yourself, the Grand Opening Celebration is happening on Sunday, November 2, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Expect snacks, refreshments, and nature-inspired activities for all ages. It’s a free event and a perfect reason to spend an afternoon outside — celebrating how Indy keeps finding ways to bring families together.
The new Holliday Park Playground is designed with everyone in mind. There’s space to run, climb, and dream, but also room to slow down — from the grassy lawn perfect for picnics to shady benches under the trees. You’ll also find modern restrooms, better parking, and quick access to the Nature Center and nearby trails, making it easy to turn a simple visit into a full day outdoors.
So grab your kids, your friends, or just your curiosity — and rediscover Holliday Park. It’s more than a playground; it’s a reminder of what happens when a community dreams big together.
