If you’re looking for something different to do in Indianapolis right now, this is it.
We recently visited Indy A to Z at the Indiana State Museum, and honestly, it’s one of the most creative and engaging exhibits we’ve experienced in the city this year. It’s not just a museum walkthrough—it’s a full-on journey through Indy’s identity, told in a way that feels interactive, personal, and surprisingly fun.
From the moment you step inside, you realize this isn’t your typical exhibit.
Indy A to Z is an immersive exhibit that explores Indianapolis using the alphabet as its framework. Each letter represents a different story, theme, or cultural element that defines the city.
Think of it as discovering Indy one letter at a time.
The exhibit features:
26 themed sections (A through Z)
More than 45 artifacts from the city’s past and present
Hands-on interactive experiences
A massive central map highlighting key locations around Indianapolis
It’s designed to help you connect with the city in a deeper, more meaningful way—and it definitely does.
1. The Interactive Experience
One of the best parts is how interactive everything feels. This isn’t just about reading plaques—you can engage with the exhibit, participate, and even add your own story.
There’s a storytelling booth where locals can share experiences of their neighborhoods, making the whole exhibit feel alive and community-driven.
2. Seeing Indy From a New Perspective
Even if you’ve lived in Indiana for years, this exhibit will surprise you.
From iconic moments like the Indianapolis 500 to local businesses, neighborhoods, and cultural icons, each section reveals something new.
We loved how it mixes:
Sports culture
Local history
Art and creativity
Community stories
It really makes you appreciate how much is happening in Indy.
3. Fun + Educational Balance
The exhibit does a great job balancing fun and learning.
Some sections are playful (like measuring your cheering volume like a real sports crowd), while others dive into deeper or even unexpected parts of the city’s history.
It’s perfect for:
Content creators
Families
Couples
Anyone exploring downtown Indy
4. Visuals and Photo Spots
If you’re creating content (like we always are 👀), this place is full of photo and video moments.
From large installations to creative setups tied to each letter, there are plenty of opportunities to capture something unique.
