LIV Golf Indianapolis is officially back in Westfield, and we spent Thursday at The Club at Chatham Hills experiencing the opening day of what is shaping up to be a big weekend of golf in Central Indiana.
Running August 20–23, LIV Golf Indianapolis brings some of the biggest names in professional golf to Hamilton County for four days of competition, but one of the things that continues to stand out about LIV is that attending feels like much more than simply watching a golf tournament.
From the moment you arrive, there’s energy throughout the course. Fans move between holes following their favorite players, music can be heard around the grounds, and there are plenty of opportunities to stop, grab something to eat or drink, explore the fan areas, and simply enjoy the atmosphere.
And then, of course, there’s the golf.
Seeing Some of Golf’s Biggest Names in Westfield
One of our favorite parts of the experience is how close fans can get to the action.
Throughout the day, we had the chance to watch players including Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Joaquín Niemann, Bubba Watson, Cameron Smith and many more competing just a few feet away.
For golf fans, there’s something pretty special about seeing that level of talent right here in Indiana.
Thursday also delivered plenty of action on the leaderboard. Laurie Canter opened the tournament with an 8-under 62 to take the individual lead, while Cameron Smith and Richard T. Lee finished one shot behind at 7-under.
Canter’s performance also helped Majesticks Golf Club take the early team lead at 17-under, followed closely by Ripper GC and Legion XIII at 15-under.
But even if you aren’t following every score, LIV Golf is surprisingly easy to enjoy.
You Don’t Have to Be a Huge Golf Fan
That may be one of the biggest takeaways from spending the day at LIV Golf Indianapolis.
Yes, the golf is the main attraction, but the overall experience makes the event approachable even for someone who doesn’t normally spend a weekend watching tournaments.
You can follow a player for several holes, find a spot and watch multiple groups come through, explore different areas around the course, or make an entire afternoon out of walking Chatham Hills.
The shotgun-style format also means there is action happening throughout the course at the same time, giving fans plenty to see without having to stay in one place all day.
It creates a completely different energy from what some people might expect from a traditional golf event.
A Big Weekend for Westfield
Having an event of this scale at The Club at Chatham Hills is also another opportunity to see Westfield hosting major sporting events right in our backyard.
LIV Golf Indianapolis is the final event of the 2026 season, meaning there is a lot on the line over the next three rounds. The weekend will ultimately crown the Indianapolis Individual Tournament Champion, the 2026 Season Individual Champion and the 2026 Team Champion.
After Thursday’s opening round, the competition is already tight.
For us, though, Day 1 was just as much about experiencing the event as it was about watching the leaderboard.
Beautiful views around Chatham Hills, some of the world’s best golfers walking just feet away, plenty of energy from the crowd and an atmosphere that makes it easy to spend several hours exploring the course — LIV Golf Indianapolis offers something different to do in Central Indiana this weekend.
