If there’s one place in Indiana that instantly switches you into holiday mode, it’s Wundernacht at the Carmel Christkindlmarkt. Every year, this event brings lights, music, and that cozy winter energy — but what really makes it unforgettable is the food. It’s no secret: this is one of the best holiday markets in Indiana, and honestly, one of the best in the U.S. If you’re looking for a spot where you can eat well, wander, and soak in the season, this is it.
The first thing you notice when you arrive is the smell — warm bread, melted cheese, spices, waffles, chocolate — everything blending into that perfect holiday aroma. And the best part? Every food stall has something worth trying.
Let’s start with the star of the night: the Raclette Chalet. This is the signature bite of the market. Traditional Swiss-German raclette melted and scraped right over fresh bread while you watch. It’s warm, simple, and so good you’ll want to get in line again. If you only try one thing, make it this.
Next up: the potato pancakes, crispy on the outside and soft inside — perfect for cold nights. Then there’s the Walking Waffle, sweet, fluffy, and easy to carry while you continue exploring. Of course, no Christkindlmarkt visit is complete without a German pretzel, and here they’re huge, warm, and even better with cheese.
One of the biggest surprises this year came from Die Bäckerei. Their cookies are soft, buttery, and honestly some of the best you’ll find at a holiday market. They feel homemade in the best way, and they disappeared fast. If you go, grab a few — you won’t regret it.
For drinks, you’ve got options. Glühwein for the classic holiday feel, Belgian hot chocolate for something rich and cozy, and Kinderpunsch for a non-alcoholic warm drink full of flavor. Perfect to walk through the market with.
And beyond the food, the market is full of handmade gifts, German ornaments, entertainment, live performers, and a tiny train village that always draws a crowd. It’s one of those places where you can come with family, friends, or solo and still feel the magic of the season.
The Carmel Christkindlmarkt runs from November 22 through December 24, 2025, giving you plenty of chances to enjoy the food, the lights, and all the holiday energy. The market is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day, but open the rest of the week with flexible hours: Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4–9 PM, Fridays and Saturdays from 12–9 PM, and Sundays from 12–8 PM. There are also special extended hours on Nov 26 (12–9 PM), Dec 15 & 16 (4–9 PM), Dec 22 & 23 (12–9 PM), and Dec 24 (12–4 PM). Whether you come during the day or under the holiday lights at night, the market has its own charm at every hour — perfect for grabbing something warm to eat, trying new treats, or just enjoying a festive winter evening in Carmel.
