Shell Starship Brings the Future of Freight to Indy 500 Weekend

The Indianapolis 500 has always been more than a race. It is a place where speed, engineering and innovation come together and this year, another impressive machine joined the celebration.

The Shell Starship made a special appearance during Indy 500 weekend and rolled through the iconic 500 Festival Parade, bringing a glimpse of the future of freight transportation to downtown Indianapolis.

Surrounded by marching bands, colorful floats, giant balloons and all 33 Indy 500 drivers, Shell Starship stood out as one of the most unique vehicles participating in one of Indianapolis’ most beloved traditions. With more than 200,000 spectators lining the parade route each year, the appearance offered race fans an opportunity to see how cutting-edge transportation technology is evolving beyond the racetrack.

But Shell Starship is more than a showpiece.

The futuristic Class 8 truck currently travels throughout the 2026 INDYCAR schedule serving as the transport vehicle for the series’ administrative trailer. Its role on the road demonstrates how advanced engineering and fuel-efficiency technology can perform in real-world conditions while supporting one of motorsports’ premier racing series.

Powered by a Cummins X15N natural gas engine and lubricated with Shell Rotella natural gas engine oil, Shell Starship was designed to explore what is possible in commercial trucking efficiency. According to Shell, the vehicle has achieved more than three times the freight ton efficiency of a standard Class 8 diesel truck when measured by ton miles per kilogram of CO2e.

That focus on performance and efficiency makes its connection to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway feel natural.

Innovation has long been part of the Indy 500 story, and Shell Starship reflects that same spirit by pushing transportation technology forward. While race cars compete for speed on the track, projects like Shell Starship remind us that engineering breakthroughs happening behind the scenes may help shape the future of mobility and logistics.

Fans attending Race Day also had the opportunity to spot Shell Starship near the fueling station inside the IMS garage area Sunday morning, adding another memorable piece of technology to an already electric Indy 500 weekend.

At We Like Indy, we love seeing how Indy continues to be a stage not only for racing legends but also for the ideas and innovations driving tomorrow.
