The Month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is known for speed, tradition, and unforgettable moments. But on Carb Day 2026, fans witnessed something a little different rolling across the famous oval.
And yes… it involved giant hot dogs.
As media on-site at IMS, we got to experience the return of the Oscar Mayer Wienie 500, a race that continues proving that Indy 500 weekend is not only about horsepower, but also about personality, entertainment, and the unexpected moments that make Indianapolis special.
The second annual Wienie 500 brought six Oscar Mayer Wienermobiles to the Brickyard for a two-lap sprint that blended motorsports energy with pure fun. What started as a playful idea is quickly becoming one of Carb Day’s most entertaining traditions.
This year’s lineup featured regional favorites including Chi Dog, Chili Dog, Seattle Dog, Slaw Dog, Corn Dog, and New York Dog. Corn Dog joined the field after winning Oscar Mayer’s nationwide “Pick Your Dog” fan vote earlier this year, adding even more excitement to the competition.
And just like any good race at IMS, there was drama.
When the checkered flag dropped, New York Dog emerged victorious, defeating Chili Dog and claiming the newly introduced “Borg-Wiener Trophy,” a playful tribute inspired by the iconic Borg-Warner Trophy awarded to Indianapolis 500 champions. The crowd reaction may have been one of the funniest moments of the day, with cheers, laughter, and even some playful boos echoing around the Speedway as New York Dog embraced its unexpected villain role.
The Wienie 500 may not count toward Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 starting grid, but that hardly matters to fans.
There is something uniquely Indianapolis about watching six oversized Wienermobiles race at one of the most legendary tracks in motorsports. It feels random, nostalgic, and completely fitting for Carb Day, a day already known for mixing final practice sessions with concerts, fan experiences, and unforgettable Speedway traditions.
Last year’s debut drew major attention and millions of viewers online, helping turn the race into a viral sensation. Its return in 2026 only confirmed that the event has found a home at IMS.
For many attending Carb Day, the Wienie 500 became more than a novelty.
It was a reminder that the Indianapolis 500 experience is about more than race cars alone. It is about memories, traditions, and moments that make you smile before the serious business of Race Weekend begins.
And honestly?
Only in Indy could a giant hot dog race feel completely normal during the biggest racing month in the world.
We were there, cameras rolling, and the crowd loved every second of it. The Wienie 500 may be short, silly, and over in just a few laps… but it continues proving that Carb Day knows exactly how to entertain.
