This year’s Firestone Fast Six featured six different personalities, six different storylines, and six drivers who all looked capable of making history next Sunday.
Starting alongside Palou on the front row will be Alexander Rossi, who qualified second with a 231.990 mph average for Ed Carpenter Racing. The 2016 Indy 500 winner looked fast all weekend and secured the best qualifying result of his Indianapolis 500 career.
One of the biggest surprises of the day came from David Malukas, who will start third for Team Penske after delivering a huge performance at 231.877 mph. It marks the best Indy 500 starting position of his career and continues his rise as one of the young drivers everyone in IndyCar is watching right now.
Then came Felix Rosenqvist, who honestly looked like the favorite for pole throughout most of qualifying day. Rosenqvist led both the opening qualifying session and the Fast 12 round before ending up fourth in the final shootout. Even with the disappointment, his speed all day long proved Meyer Shank Racing is bringing serious pace into race week.
Santino Ferrucci qualified fifth for A.J. Foyt Enterprises after another aggressive and consistent run at IMS. Ferrucci continues to build a reputation as one of the drivers who always seems to find extra speed at Indianapolis.
Rounding out the Fast Six was fan favorite Pato O’Ward in sixth for Arrow McLaren. Even though O’Ward narrowly missed the front rows, the Mexican driver remains one of the biggest threats heading into race day because of his race pace and experience running up front at Indy.
One of the coolest things about this year’s qualifying session was seeing six different teams represented within the first two rows of the grid. That kind of competition is exactly what makes the Indianapolis 500 feel so unpredictable every single year.
The atmosphere around IMS on qualifying day felt electric despite the weather delays from Saturday. Fans packed the grandstands early, the track conditions kept changing throughout the afternoon, and every qualifying attempt felt like it could completely change the starting order.
And honestly, that’s what makes Indy in May so special.
From the pressure of one-lap attempts to the roar of cars hitting over 230 mph down the front stretch, qualifying weekend always reminds us that the Indianapolis 500 is more than just another race. It’s part of the culture of Indiana.
Now, with the Fast Six officially locked in and the front row set, all eyes turn toward race day on May 24.
Because after this weekend, the hype around the 110th Indianapolis 500 just became very real.
