We recently had the opportunity to preview FOOD: Science, Culture, and Cuisine, the newest exhibition opening at Conner Prairie in Fishers, and it may be one of the most engaging experiences the museum has hosted in years.
Located inside the Museum Experience Center, this exhibition marks a major milestone for Conner Prairie as it becomes the first national traveling exhibition ever presented by the museum.
Presented by Corteva Agriscience™, FOOD: Science, Culture, and Cuisine takes visitors on an interactive journey through the world of food, exploring how science, culture, agriculture, technology, and human connection all come together around something we experience every day.
During our visit, we found that this isn’t a traditional museum exhibit where you simply read information panels. Instead, guests are encouraged to participate, experiment, and engage with food using all five senses. Interactive stations throughout the exhibit explore topics such as taste, smell, touch, sound, and sight, helping visitors better understand how our brains and bodies experience food.
The exhibition also dives into fascinating subjects including food chains and food webs, the science behind cooking, physical and chemical changes in food, the scientific method, and the relationship between form and function in ingredients and food production.
One of the aspects we enjoyed most is how the experience balances education with fun. Families can participate in hands-on activities, learn about global food traditions, explore agricultural innovation, and discover how future technologies may change the way food is produced and consumed.
According to Conner Prairie, the exhibition was designed for visitors of all ages and highlights the universal role food plays in bringing people together across cultures and generations. The experience encourages guests to think beyond what’s on their plate and consider the science, history, and innovation behind every meal.
The exhibit occupies both the upper and lower galleries of the Museum Experience Center and will be available throughout the summer, giving families another reason to plan a visit to one of Indiana’s most popular attractions.
If you’re looking for a unique family activity, enjoy interactive museums, or simply love food, this is an exhibit worth adding to your Indiana summer bucket list.
